An old Scottish song begins, “The Campbells are Coming, Hurrah, Hurrah”, but this time they’re not the Campbells of Cawdor or Breadalbane but the Campbells of Philippi who are the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce Members of the Month in November.

Olin Campbell graduated from Philippi High School, earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering at West Virginia University, and went to work at Sperry Gyroscope, now UNISYS, on Long Island, New York.  Wife Marjory Murray, whom he married in 1957, was a native of Cincinnati and graduate of Hempstead, New York, High School and Hofstra University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics.  She taught Mathematics in the public schools of West Hempstead and Roslyn, New York.

The Campbells retired in 1995 and moved to Philippi where Olin took over the only dedicated office supply store in Barbour County and renovated two adjacent buildings where Marj opened Knitting Machines, Etc., selling knitting machines and providing lessons in knit clothing.  “Knitting machines were our main focus twenty years ago,” she said, “but today our classes in basket-making are perhaps the most popular. “

Marj opened Mountain Treasures as a branch of her knitting business to provide an outlet for craftspersons and writers from West Virginia.  “Mountain Treasures”, she says, “is a popular and well-stocked source for stained glass, pottery, quilts, paintings, hand-made baskets, photography, note paper, and other high-end crafts, as well as a treasury of books on West Virginia history, poetry, children’s books, novels and other publications by West Virginia writers and poets.  “Our publications about the Civil War and our cook books are highly sought-after,” she said.

Olin Campbell’s Office Store has all the supplies one needs to maintain a business or home office, he says, including paper and envelopes of all sizes and colors, computer ink, small necessities like glue, paper-clips, pens and pencils, poster and display boards, even West Virginia post cards.  “Our collection of school supplies is highly popular with local school teachers,” he said.  “The Office Store will also order office furniture, machinery, and business equipment for early delivery,” he said.

The Office Store is located at 13 North Main Street in Philippi, telephone 457-3800, while Mountain Treasures and Knitting Machines, Etc., can be found at #1 North Main Street, telephone 457-2032.
