The Tygart Flyer Scenic Train is a great way to appreciate splendid scenery by rail, all while following the path of two marvellous rivers that flow through Barbour County. The round trip journey takes approximately four hours, and the final destination is the High Falls of Cheat: a 150-foot-wide, 18 feet high waterfall. Because the landmark is situated in a remote part of the region, a trip on the Tygart Flyer Scenic Train offers Barbour County visitors chances to get a taste of some of the natural beauty that has attracted people to the area for generations. An S-curve tunnel and a canyon that descends 1,500 feet deep are just a couple of many other sights to enjoy.
The train fare includes an "all-you-can-eat" sandwich buffet, a cookie for dessert, and refreshing non-alcoholic beverages. For a reasonable additional fee, guests can also ride in the vintage 1922-era Pullman parlour car located in the rear of the train. It offers especially spectacular views from the comfort of supportive armchairs. Because the train's route spans 46 miles, it's an excellent opportunity to see some of the picturesque scenery that surrounds Barbour County with all the luxuries of a relaxing train ride.
Located three miles south of Philippi, West Virginia, the Barbour County Airport is also known as Simpson Airport. It is associated with the FAA airport code 9W3. The facility covers 89 acres and offers a convenient way for people to travel by private airplanes into the county. Some providers also offer helicopter tours, giving Barbour County's visitors a bird's-eye view of the area's breath-taking mountains and valleys.
The airport was established in 1947. Thanks to a coordinated effort from the area's airport authority, along with improvements that cost several million dollars, it is hoped that the facilities will be used more frequently for air travel. Recent construction projects at the airport include a fuel farm and a complex comprised of ten aircraft hangars. Aircraft tie downs are also available.
The Barbour County Airport has a single runway stretching 1,500 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is lighted and regularly attended. Additionally, the fact that the airport does not charge a non-commercial landing fee makes it an attractive spot for aviation enthusiasts who have their own planes. The Barbour County Airport is a privately-owned facility.
